BUNDAR ROAD HERITAGE
CRITICAL ZONE
The Bundar Road (M. A. Jinnah Road) area
is a treasure trove of beautiful classical architecture dating from the early
days of Karachi and contains magnificient public buildings such as the KMC
building, town halls such as the Denso Hall and Khaliqdina Hall, institutions of
repute such as the Mama Parsi school, and other beautiful buildings.
Unfortunately, the beautiful architecture of Bundar road lies a victim of severe decay,
neglect, misuse, rampant commercialism, and the effects of pollution. Most of the buildings are in a bad condition or have been disfigured by
unsightly additions, signboards, electric wiring, and soot
from the city traffic giving them an ugly and trashed appearance. Bundar Rd.
architecture needs to be of prime importance to the city authorities because it
contains some of the oldest buildings from Karachi's past. If cleaned and
restored, Bundar road would take the look of an old victorian-era European
city-street. Unfortunately, the city government has been neglectful of the city
center's restoration, and there are plans on the cards to make an expressway
over M. A. Jinnah Road. If this expressway is made, it will surely lead to a
death of all the architectural treasures that are contained on this historic
road, and with its death, it will deal a severe blow to Karachi's identity.
In this
section, we follow Bundar Road (M. A. Jinnah Road) architecture (sans public
buildings that are covered in another section) from the west starting at the
intersection with Garden road and going east towards the Mereweather tower.
