KEAMARI / PORTSIDE AREA HERITAGE

NAPIER MOLE BOAT WHARF (1914)

MULES MANSION (1917)

Old Picture

Present

The Mules Mansion was named after Charles Mules, the first full-time chairman of the Karachi Port Trust. It was designed by Moses Somake and has a very ornate and vigourous character, employing classical elements and other ornamentation with abandon. The inspiration for its design however, seems to have been the Karachi Port Trust building. After the independence of Pakistan, the Mules Mansion building was used as the Naval Headquarters for a period of time. Currently, this building is in a dire need of renovation and restoration having been marred by the impact of pollution and heavy traffic due to its location close to the Keamari port.

ROW BLOCKS

LOW INCOME BLOCKS

A collection of small apartment buildings or offices, probably meant for low income staff, that can be seen on the road by the Napier Mole Boat Wharf. These bocks are currently in a state of decay, and have various structures built on top of them.

HERITAGE BEING DESTROYED

These buildings by the Keamari portside were being destroyed in 2005 due to a road expansion project being undertaken in the area. Their current status is unknown. These blocks probably housed residences or offices of port officers in the early days of Karachi.
